Properly Choose & Put on a Dog Collar

How to Properly Choose & Put on a Dog Collar

A dog collar should be worn properly to ensure that it’s comfortable and safe for your dog. Here are some key things to keep in mind when fitting a dog collar:

  • Size: The collar should be the right size for your dog’s neck. It should be snug enough that it won’t slip off, but not too tight that it restricts your dog’s breathing or movement. You should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck.
  • Placement: The collar should sit high on your dog’s neck, just below their ears. This will help prevent them from slipping out of the collar and keep them under control during walks.
  • Check for Comfort: Make sure the collar is comfortable for your dog to wear. Check for any signs of irritation or discomfort around your dog’s neck.
  • Check for Safety: Ensure that the collar is safe for your dog to wear. Check for any loose threads or parts that may come off and be swallowed by your dog.
  • ID Tags: It’s important to have ID tags attached to your dog’s collar with their name, your phone number, and other relevant information.

Have a puppy? Puppies can grow incredibly fast, and an embedded collar can be a painful and dangerous consequence. Embedded collars occur when a collar becomes too tight and starts to cut into the animal’s skin, leading to infections, wounds, and extreme discomfort. To prevent such a situation, it’s crucial to monitor your pet’s growth and adjust or replace their collar accordingly.

By keeping these key points in mind, you can ensure that your dog’s collar is properly fitted and safe for them to wear. Regularly check your dog’s collar to make sure it’s still in good condition and replace it if it becomes frayed or damaged.
